February 4 is World Cancer Day in Logistics Blog

Everyday researchers around the world look for new therapies in hopes to shape the future of cancer treatments in the forthcoming years. From novel chemotherapies to immunotherapies, targetedtherapies, and combination therapies, the race for a cure holds a promise for many struggling with the disease.

Eight million people die from cancer worldwide every year, out of which four million people die prematurely (aged 30 to 69 years). Leading cancer risk factors include tobacco, alcohol, environmental, diet, physical inactivity, cancer-causing infections.

Among the most exciting new treatments are immunotherapies, which use the patients’ immune system to battle the disease. A central player in cancer immunotherapies is a white blood cell known as the T cell, which in healthy individuals identifies and kills infected or abnormal cells, including cancer cells. Through genetic engineering, biotech companies activate a patients’ own T cells sothat they attack cancer cells.
